Geologists from the Central University, Himachal Pradesh, have maintained that the upper crust of hills in McLeodganj area comprised of loose soil and crushed stone. Such crusts are prone to landslides in case there they lack proper drainage. In case water keeps on seeping into the upper crust of the soil in these hills, it will make these prone to landslides, Lalit Mohan’s report in The Tribune has explained recently.

The scientists are also of the view that the leaking septic tanks and water pipes in the region are also responsible for landslides in McLeodganj area. In Forsythganj area the residents have been complaining that cracks are developing in their houses due to sinking hills.
