With Celebrities Backing Ban TikTok Campaign Grows in India

With growing backlash against China, short videos sharing platform TikTok is facing stronger campaigns for its ban in India. Since the outbreak of Coronavirus from China, larger number of people have become critical of Chinese origin platforms. The mandatory affiliation to Chinese government’s censorship and information sharing policies are the major concerns.

TikTok is a Chinese app which has gained large popularity specially in India. With majority of the users being young citizens, it is very important to assure the safety and security of the app. It is strict at adhering to censoring keywords sensitives to the Chinese government, it is failing badly at policing its contents on various moral grounds.

In a mega push to the campaign for banning the Chinese app, veteran Bollywood actor has joined the campaign. The senior actor who is also a politician tweeted ‘Ban TikTok’ on Tuesday. Other celebrities soon jumped in his support. Many politicians too have called for the ban.

According to recent leaks, Beijing government has been enforcing the app to ban the presence of contents containing keywords such as Tibet, Taiwan, Tiananmen Square, etc., that are politically sensitive in China. Besides, there is always a serious question of security of user information on any kind of Chinese origin platforms.

However, it has failed at policing its contents on adhering to various moral grounds. Recently, in a serious consequence, the National Commission of Women and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh campaigned that the Chinese app should be banned completely. India is only one of the few countries allowing TikTok as many others have banned it on security concerns.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s paper, Organiser, in an published in an editorial, “TikTok’s censorship rules which allows all such content is very sensitive when it comes to China. It is clear that it censors posts in India that mention China or Tibet. It is known that TikTok, a video-sharing social networking service, is owned by a Chinese company called ByteDance. However, it is very concerning that the company which is concerned only about China is allowing violent content including videos that glorify rape, acid attacks and terrorism,”.

Reka Sharma, Chairperson, National Commission for Women (NCW), tweeted for a total ban on the Chinese app.
