The Office of Tibet in Washington DC along with Tibetans associations and organizations organized a gratitude event called as ‘Thank You America’ on Tuesday at the Capitol Hill. Among the distinguished guests at the event, House Speaker said that they thank His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people on the occasion.
“When you say ‘Thank you, America,’ we say thank you to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the people of Tibet…and to the Tibetans in the diaspora, who are working so hard to preserve the culture, the language, the religion, the strength of it all,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) according to the report in the official report by International Campaign fro Tibet.
At the request of the event organisers, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has send a video message for the ‘Thank You America’ event. The Tibetan spiritual leader explains in the video that while the United States is one of the most powerful nations in the world, that too led by democracy and a rule of law, it has an important role as the leader of the free world with the rest of the world trusts and have confidence on and thanked the country and their countrymen for their dedicated support to people of Tibet.
The event is organized by Office of Tibet, Washington DC, International Campaign for Tibet and Capital Area Tibetan Association. Dr. Lobsang Sangay, President of Central Tibetan Administration gave the welcome remarks thanking the US on behalf of the Tibetans. He also presented a huge dharma wheel to Speaker Pelosi as a token of gratitude on behalf all Tibetans.
According to the official report of Central Tibetan Administration, Congressman Jim McGovern, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Congresswoman Betty McCollum, Congressman Ben McAdams, Congressman Tom Suozzi also gave impassioned speeches thanking the Tibetan people for their contributions to American society and stating their continued commitment to truth, human rights, and justice in Tibet.
Other speakers of the evening included the US Ambassador of Religious Freedom Sam Brownback, the President of the International Campaign for Tibet Matteo Mecacci, the President of the National Endowment for Democracy Carl Gershman, Members of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile Pema Chagzoetsang and Tsewang Rigzin. Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama Mr. Ngodup Tsering provided the closing remarks and the Vote of Thanks who was joined by Presidents of Tibetan Associations in the US.
The event was a part of the Central Tibetan Administration’s gratitude campaign. Through the special event on Tuesday night, Tibetans extended their gratitude to the people of America for their 60 years of continued friendship and dedicated support.
