2nd September: VPNs are used by a variety of people for a variety of reasons. Many people are using it to stream things that are not available in India and there are also some who use it for wrongdoing. VPN enables a user to remain anonymous online and perform anything possible on the web. Due to the hazards and inconveniences, it brings to the identification of a user for the authorities, the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs has recommended the government prohibit VPN use in India.
For both good and harmful objectives, every technology can be employed. Although VPN helps the user keep anonymous, it does not sound proper for several reasons to ban it completely. When they are linked to a public network or servers, many users utilize VPNs to keep their devices safe. VPNs are also helpful to safeguard privacy because applications and websites that gather information cannot receive accurate information on a regular basis. In addition, VPNs are also used by companies to ensure they constantly have safe data, so that companies continue to change their server locations.
According to a report by MediaNama, the committee has ordered the Ministry of Home Affairs to improve its ability to identify users who are hiding on the dark web using a VPN.
Finally, with the use of a ‘coordinating mechanism’ in cooperation with foreign institutions, the committee wants the Government to restrict the use of VPNs in India. The Committee would like to connect the Home Ministry with the Ministry of Electronics and Informatics to identify and prohibit all available VPNs in India with the help of the web provider (ISPs).
