US Urges Tibetan Parliamentarians to put aside their differences and resolve the deadlock

Dharamshala, 24th August: Lisa Peterson, The Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor wrote to Secretary Tsewang Ngodhup of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile on August 2nd, asking the elected members to put their disagreements aside and focus on the important issues that require their attention.

Despite the pandemic and other problems, she wrote in her letter that they were encouraged to see the Tibetan diaspora come together to elect a new Sikyong and members of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile this year (TPiE). The commitment of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) to democratic administration and constitutional institutions, as well as its support for the Tibetan diaspora around the world, is critical. The United States is a steadfast supporter of the CTA and its obligations, and they will continue to do so in any way they can.

She also mentioned that the new members of Parliament have been sworn in for a long time. The September session is approaching, and there is a lot to do in a short amount of time. The international community looks to the CTA and TPIE for guidance on resuming dialogue with Beijing, maintaining Tibetan culture, language, and religion, promoting Tibetans’ human rights worldwide, and achieving meaningful autonomy for Tibetans in Tibet Autonomous Region.

She went on to say that parliamentary procedure disputes that aren’t handled quickly and in accordance with the rule of law risk eroding the Tibetan diaspora’s and worldwide community’s faith in the CTA and TPIE. We urge political officials to put their disagreements aside and focus on the serious issues that require their attention.
