US Secretary of State Urge Hollywood to Resist Chinese Pressure

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo has urged Hollywood to resist Chinese pressure to censor American films. Hollywood has more e been kowtowing to the Chinese pressure to censor American films in gaining access to Chinese audiences, ultimately eroding Hollywood’s freedom of creativity by setting various terms.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a closed door gathering with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) on Thursday, urged in his speech, Hollywood to resist Beijing pressure to censor American films in exchange for gaining access to Chinese audiences. Pompeo praised Hollywood as a symbol of American freedom and creativity but urged movie studios to help extend President Trump’s push to level the international playing field for the American film industry.

“China is eroding Hollywood’s freedom by setting the terms of the content of movies, as studios compete to have their movies accepted among the limited number of movies China authorizes to be shown in the country each year.” Pompeo added according to reports.

With growing significance of global audience for movies, Hollywood film makers have been forced to meet various terms and conditions laid out by the Chinese government so that they could release their films in China. Pompeo also praised Hollywood as a symbol of American freedom and creativity, but urged movie studios to help extend President Trump’s push to level the international playing field for the American film industry.
