UCSD Announces Dalai Lama’s Public Address, Commencement Event

The University of California San Diego (UCSD) has announced the tickets for His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s public address in June this year. The University is hosting the Tibetan spiritual leader this to speak for an estimated 25,000 attendance of university members and general public following which His Holiness is also scheduled to address their all campus commencement this year.

“The University of California San Diego will be hosting His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama at a public event June 16 where he will speak about “Embracing the Beauty of Diversity in our World” to an estimated 25,000 attendees. A limited number of tickets will be available to faculty, staff and students, at no charge, beginning April 26.” said the news report in the UCSD portal.

The news reads the tickets for public will be sold on May 1. The events are presented in partnership with The Friends of the Dalai Lama Foundation, which was founded by Ven. Lama Tenzin Dhonden, the Personal Emissary for Peace to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

The University’s decision to invite the Dalai lama as their commencement speaker grew into a contest ground for the Chinese international students studying in the university. Especially, the graduates who will be attending the commencement with their parents coming from China protested strongly against the University’s decision.

The Chinese students expressed that they will be discriminated back at their home if they were a part of the commencement where the Dalai Lama, who the whole world he is a renowned peace advocate, a beacon of hope for humanity, China considers him as a separatist instigating violence, as the speaker. The Nobel laureate fled to exile in 1959 after the Chinese government conquered Tibet violently, taking more 1.2 million lives.

“We are indeed fortunate to host His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, a world-renowned spiritual leader and Nobel Prize winner, at UC San Diego on June 16 for a public address,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “Hearing His Holiness’ message of compassion and inclusion will be an experience that will last a lifetime.” Khosla noted that the Dalai Lama will also address UC San Diego graduates and their families at a June 17 invitation-only All Campus Commencement according to the report.
