Villagers Pray for the Release of Detained Buddhist Abbot Amid Tragedy
The Tibetan village of Ponkor is gripped with anguish following the death of its leader, Gonpo Namgyal, and the continued detention of the revered Abbot Tenpa Dhargyal. Villagers have been holding prayers and rituals, imploring for the safe release of the abbot, who has been in custody since May.
Death After Brutal Torture
Gonpo Namgyal, in his early 40s, succumbed to injuries inflicted during six months of detention under Golog Prefecture police. Released on November 16, he passed away at his home two days later. Sources reveal that his body bore extensive burns, allegedly caused by repeated high-voltage electric shocks. These injuries were visible during his cremation at Traling Monastery, leaving the village in shock and mourning.
The late leader’s efforts to preserve Tibetan language and culture, along with his advocacy for Buddhist ethics, had made him a beloved figure in the community. His death has only intensified calls for justice and the release of others detained alongside him.
Prayers for Abbot Tenpa Dhargyal
Among those still detained is Abbot Tenpa Dhargyal of Shangtoe Monastery, a respected spiritual leader known for his connection to the late Khenchen Jigme Phuntsok, founder of Larung Gar Buddhist Academy. Abbot Tenpa’s arrest, along with 19 others, followed his role in organizing Tibetan language classes and advising nomadic herders against selling livestock to slaughterhouses.
“Khenpo [Abbot] is an incredibly precious holder of the Buddhist doctrine,” a source shared tearfully. “His devotees are extremely worried about his health, so they are continuously performing rituals in the village and requesting other monks and religious devotees to conduct as many prayers for his health and safe release.”
The abbot’s detainment has left a significant void in the spiritual life of the village, as he was a guiding force in upholding Buddhist ethics and cultural preservation.
Uncertainty for Other Detainees
Details about the conditions of the other 19 detainees remain scarce, adding to the community’s distress. The arrests in May have been linked to efforts by local leaders to promote education and ethical practices rooted in Tibetan traditions—an initiative viewed as a form of resistance against policies undermining Tibetan identity.
A Community’s Resilience
Despite their grief and fear, the villagers of Ponkor remain steadfast in their devotion and advocacy. Rituals and prayers are being held daily at Shangtoe Monastery and in homes across the village, uniting the community in a shared hope for justice and the safe return of their spiritual leader.
This tragedy highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Tibetans under restrictive policies and harsh repression. As the villagers mourn the loss of a beloved leader, they cling to the enduring power of their faith and culture, calling on the global community to support their struggle for justice and human rights.
