Tibetan Dental Science Student Sonam Sangmo Wins Gold Medal

Dharamshala, 17th March: Sonam Sangmo, has topped her class of Bachelor in Dental Science from Sudha Rustagi Dental College, Faridabad, and has been awarded the Gold Medal at the college’s annual convocation ceremony on March 10, 2022. Sonam, a resident of Choglamsar, Ladakh, attended TCV Ladakh until class 5 and TCV Selakui from class 6 to 12.

In an exclusive interview with tibetanjournal, when asked was dentist her aim from childhood? she answered “From childhood I had always wanted to become a doctor. So i chose science stream after ten. But once I was into Science stream, I was little confused regarding the options ie BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) and MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). Finally after taking few factorsinto considerations and obviously Later I realised that I was more into becoming a dentist,so I decided to take up BDS Course.”

About role model in her life, she said “As we grow up and when it’s time to choose a career, I feel it’s very beneficial to meet someone in that particular field. I was in TCV School Selakui from class 6 to 12. In our school we were so fortunate because our school used to invite resource person from different fields. Dr Damdul la is a renowned Dentist and he used to visit our school. I used to get so motivated to listen to Dr Damdul la’s speech and have always wanted to become someone like him.”

She believe that hardwork, being regular, staying always motivated, sacrifice and praying well are key to success. She pointed out that hard work alone is not enought for success, with hardwork one must always stay motivated. Moreover, she believe time management plays a crucial part.

Sonam expressed her success story on tibet.net by saying “At a personal level, I wanted to perform well to show gratitude to everyone who had supported me throughout my life. Furthermore, what really motivated me to work hard was when I came to know that I was the only and the first Tibetan student in my college and that only a few of our college staff and classmates knew about Tibet and Tibet’s issue.”

Sonam also credits her success to her determination to pursue higher education. “Often I notice that students take college as a part of life during which we are supposed to have fun. But I believe that college is one of the most important stepping stones for a bright career. We have to of course enjoy college life but should also keep in mind the importance of doing well academically for better job opportunities and a better future.” she continued.

She used the opportunity to thank her family, TCV staff, the Department of Education (CTA), her friends, supporters, and everyone who helped her get to where she is now.

Sonam finished her final year exams in September 2021 and is presently completing her internship at ESI Dental College and Hospital in Rohini, Delhi.
