Tibetan Buddhist Teacher Sogyal Rinpoche Dies in Hospital

One of the most well known as well as controversial Tibetan Buddhist teacher, Sogyal Rinpoche has passed away while at a hospital in Thailand on Wednesday. The Buddhist teacher was 72 years old and he was battling with complications arising from cancer at the hospital and he succumbed to deteriorating health yesterday.

The news of Sogyal Rincpoche’s death was published Wednesday in a Facebook post of his official page where the news about his treatment at the hospital in Thailand was also shared on Tuesday, according to the compilation by the Tricycle.

“Sogyal Rinpoche’s health deteriorated today after he suffered a pulmonary embolism and he left this world around 1pm here in Thailand,” a post on his Facebook page announced Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, a Facebook post said that Sogyal Rinpoche was at the hospital being monitored for complications arising from his battle with cancer. Doctors had earlier removed two cancerous spots on his liver. But in a July 25 post, the lama said that more cancerous cells had been detected and that he was beginning chemotherapy.” said the report in Tricycle.

The Buddhist teacher was born Sogyal Lakar in Kham, Tibet. Sogyal Rinpoche is best known as the author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. As a lama in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, he founded the international Buddhist group Rigpa, which he led until 2017, when some students came out publicly accusing him of sexual abuse.

“Although his passing was sudden, in a way, all the same, it was very peaceful and serene, and he was surrounded by close and loving students,” posted his official Facebook page, “Rinpoche is now resting in meditation. Several Lamas are supporting us with precise guidance at every step, and especially Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoche.”
