After weeks and weeks of lacerating and demystifying the ‘divine’ administration of the United States President Donald Trump, widely-popular political satirist John Oliver put his research team to work on something completely unprecedented: the Dalai Lama.
In the weekly segment of The Last Week Tonight, John Oliver talks about the gross human rights violations in Tibet and how China is vehemently trying to put a cloak on everything.
According to a statistic by Freedom House, Tibet ranks before Somalia and North Korea when it comes to ‘worst aggregate scores for political rights and civil liberties’. The first is war-torn Syria.
Mr Oliver did not mince words when he addressed the reoccurring instances of self-immolation in Tibet, an astounding 146 since 2009. “The Chinese police have been less than sympathetic towards these self-immolators,” said Oliver.
Regarded as an undisputable rock-star in the arena of political commentators, John Oliver travels all the way to India to talk with the Dalai Lama about the uncertainty of Tibet situation and the problematic development of incarnation which might plague the future Tibetan generation.
Asked about how China would appoint its own Dalai Lama after the 14th Dalai Lama’s demise, the Buddhist leader said that Chinese leaders lacked “common sense”, pointing at the fact that the world will not take a Chinese-appointed Dalai Lama as seriously as they would want to.
