New Delhi: ‘Stay still!’ Indian Government To Disabled People During National Anthem. Shoving a patriotic stick to the disabled populace in India who go through physical hurdles routinely, the Indian government has now made it mandatory for disabled people to ‘stay still’ while the national anthem is being played.
According to the government, ‘disabled’ means those who are physically challenged and would find the task of standing for the national anthem arduous. However, when mental disability comes in, the decision abandons reason.
NDTV, while narrating the ordeal of Aru, a 17-year-old autistic kid, quoted Aru’s mom as saying, “My child doesn’t understand patriotism, forget that, he doesn’t even know he is an Indian. If I had to train him I would rather have him brush on his own than stand still for something that’s meaningless to him.”
Audience who take indignation at random people in the crowd for not standing up during the national anthem are generally apathetic towards the plight of the said individual. This has been proven time and again through cases where movie-goers are beaten up for not standing during the national anthem. However minute the number of incidences, this may pave way for a dangerous trend in the coming future.
The Supreme Court on November 30 made it mandatory for all movie-goers to stand up while the national anthem is being played.
