Sikyong: Biden should appoint special envoy to Tibet

DHARAMSALA, APRIL 15 : President of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) Lobsang Sangay said that US President Joe Biden’s administration should name an envoy to Tibet who will not only “access the ground situation but will also play a pivotal role in arriving at a solution acceptable to all” in the future.

Sangay made the comments in an interview with Nadir Ali, Director of the Centre for Peace and Justice (CPJ), about the current situation in Tibet, as well as a constructive and acceptable solution.

According to the CTA President, the only way to achieve long-term peace and prosperity for Tibet is to follow the Dalai Lama’s suggestion of pursuing a middle path policy.

“We want a peaceful and substantive resolution of Tibet in line with Tibet’s expectations, a resolution that is appropriate and beneficial to both China and Tibet,” he said.

“Tibet has been struggling for 60 years now for securing rights, and in the past, we have seen very little being done,” Sangay said in response to a question about the US role in resolving the Tibet issue. The Tibetan Support and Policy Act of 2020, which has been a source of hope for Tibetans around the world, was recently passed by the United States in response to gross human rights abuses and cultural assimilation. However, the work is not yet completed. As the world’s chief, the United States, in my view, should name an envoy to Tibet. This would be useful not only in gaining access to the ground situation but also in arriving at a solution that is agreeable to all parties. The United States, under President Biden’s leadership, should be the torchbearer for Tibet’s cause, urging world leaders to work toward a peaceful solution.”

“It is the duty of all peace-loving nations around the world to assist the Tibetan people.” He also said that China should behave responsibly and that if it is forced to announce its status on the international stage, “it should at the very least resolve the long-standing problems within its own borders first.”

The CTA President went on to say that naming and sending the envoy would not only give Tibetans new hope, but it will also send a strong message to China that a negotiated settlement is an unavoidable condition for everyone’s prosperity.

“I am very hopeful about the future, and I am confident that, with the Dalai lama’s blessings, we can succeed in our efforts to create the peaceful and prosperous Tibet that He envisions.”

He added, “I am optimistic that the international community will continue to help Tibet and Tibetans in their legitimate struggle for a stable and secure future.”
