Portrait of Dalai Lama made up of Rubik’s Cubes goes up for auction

On July 5, Invader’s portrait of the Dalai Lama, which is formed up of a mosaic of Rubik’s Cubes, will be auctioned in Paris. The ‘Rubik Dalai Lama’ is being auctioned off. The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader’s image is expected to sell for more than $365,000. It was created by Invader, a French street artist, and is made out of 225 Rubik’s cubes.

Invader is recognized for his mosaic tile pieces that include pixelated reproductions of the characters from the 1978 Space Invaders video game that ‘invade’ towns all over the world. In 2020, his version of the Mona Lisa, which is made up of 330 Rubik’s cubes, sold for $520680, far exceeding pre-sale expectations.

Invader is a French urban artist. He is known for his ceramic tile mosaics modeled on the pixelated art of the 1970s–1980s 8-bit video games, many of which depict the titular aliens from the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders (the inspiration for his pseudonym). As of December 2020, his creations can be seen in highly visible locations in 79 cities in 33 countries. To accompany his citywide installations, or “Invasions”, Invader publishes books and maps as guides to the locations of his mosaics. Invader also makes mosaics using QR codes and stacks of Rubik’s Cubes (with the latter typically installed indoors).
