P. Stobdan Says Sorry to Dalai Lama and His Followers

Following the uproar against Phunchok Stobdan’s controversial remarks on His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the former tenders an apology. Stobdan in a video message says that he is deeply sorry to the spiritual leader and his followers, specially to those in the region of Ladakh as they consider His Holiness as their spiritual leader.

In the video message, Mr. Stobdan, a former Indian diplomat says that he perhaps had used some not so good words about His Holiness the Dalai Lama but it was not meant to hurt anyone. Therefore he told that he would like to say sorry to all who were hurt including His Holiness’s followers in Ladakh. He further added that he never had any ulterior motive behind hurting the religious sentiments.

The former diplomat even added that he is a deep follower of the spiritual leader and he worships him. He says that his intentions were proper in terms of an strategic expert but some wordings could have gone wrong. Therefore he added that he deeply apologise and please don’t feel hurt.

“His Holiness Dalai Lama is a supreme religious leader, but he is also a geopolitical entity. We all know the history behind his coming to India, seeking exile here and setting up a government-in-exile in Dharamshala. Hence, my comments were purely made from the geopolitical and strategic standpoint… Let’s not forget the Tibet issue is not resolved yet,” Stobdan told according to The Print.

During a recent debate on Aaj Tak, a national television news channel in India, Mr. Stobdan accused that His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his exile Tibetan administration is not speaking up on the border dispute between India and China. He rudely remarked that if His Holiness is not aligned with China, he should clarify that the disputed regions belong to India, as a representative of Tibet, instead of just carrying out teachings in Dharamshala.

People from the Union Territory of Ladakh immediately demanded from the former diplomat for an apology as disrespect of their spiritual leader is unacceptable. A strike has also been called by the merchants across the city of Leh! The Thiksey and Diskit monasteries in Leh have issued a statement demanding an apology from Phunchok. The Merchant Association of Leh has called for a strike and asked all shops across Leh district to join the strike in solidarity. All Ladakh Gonpa Association, LBA Youth Wing, LBA Women Wing and political leaders have condemned the statement of P Stobdan.

But ,what he has said is absolutely correct . His holiness can not remain silent on China in such a crucial time. That’s so opportunistic.
