One Tibetan Tests COVID-19 Positive in Mundgod, Tally at 24 in India

With report of a Tibetan testing COVID-19 positive from Mundgod Tibetan Settlement, the total tally of confirmed cases among Tibetans in India is at 24. Since the country gradually unlocks, movement of people have been beginning and it has led to a surge in the cases of infection. A countable number of Tibetans have also been subjected to this trend.

A 34 year old man has been tested positive to Coronavirus from Tibetan settlement in Mundgod. He has been taken to the district hospital in the region and his primary contacts are kept under institutional quarantine by the Tibetan administration. Besides, a total of 7 positive cases from Ladakh and 3 positive cases including one death from Delhi has been reported in the past week.

“COVID-19 status in exile Tibetan community: As per this week, 7 cases in Ladakh, a 58-year-old male, 28-year-old male, 23-year-old female, 20-year-old female, 55-year-old female, 23-year-old female, a 21-year-old female. Among them, the 20-year-old, 21-year-old and 23-year-old woman who contracted the virus this week are reported to have recovered as well. In Delhi, 3 Tibetans, a 78-year-old man, 34-year-old man, 29-year-old woman, of which the 78-year-old man passed away on June 10. From Doeguling settlement of Mundgod, a 30-year-old man has reported positive, bringing the total to 11 cases confirmed this week. So far, 24 people have been infected in the Tibetan community in India, with 13 recoveries, 2 deaths, 9 active cases.” CTA Wuhan COVID-19 task force member Dr. Tsering Tsamchoe briefed on Thursday.

The briefing also added that there is no critical cases among the Tibetans. As per the latest update, there are 213 cases of Coronavirus infections among Tibetan refugees abroad, i.e., those refugees in countries apart from India, Nepal and Bhutan. This is as per the information sent by the Offices of Tibet from various countries. According to the information, there are 8 deaths while 165 of them have recovered. This leaves a total of 40 active cases in Tibetans abroad.

There has been  a continued rise in the cases of coronavirus infection in India, till now more than 367K cases of infection have been identified and more than 12K have lost their lives. As for whole world, there are more than 8.2 million confirmed cases with more than 446K deaths.
