In a ceremony held Thursday, the US Secretary of State awarded the prestigious International Religious Freedom Award to Lhadon Tethong, Co-Founder, and Director of the Tibet Action Institute (TAI). Tethong, along with other remarkable individuals, was recognized for her unwavering commitment to promoting and defending religious freedom globally.
The awards ceremony, part of the Department’s commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the International Religious Freedom Act, acknowledged the outstanding contributions of individuals who have shown exceptional courage in championing human rights and mutual respect for all. The recipients have actively worked in countries such as Nigeria, Iraq, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, and Nicaragua, advocating for the rights of various religious communities, including Orthodox Christians, Tibetan Buddhists, and others.
Lhadon Tethong’s commendable work as the Director of TAI has played a pivotal role in shedding light on the challenges faced by Tibetan Buddhists under the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Leading a team of technologists and human rights advocates, Tethong has spearheaded the development of open-source communication technologies, nonviolent strategies, and innovative training programs for Tibetans and other groups facing repression by the PRC.
One of the notable achievements highlighted during the ceremony was Tethong’s recent presentation of recommendations for the PRC at the Universal Periodic Review 45 Pre-Session. Acting on behalf of numerous Tibetan civil society organizations, including those advocating for religious freedom, Tethong emphasized the interference by the PRC with the right to freedom of religion or belief for Tibetan Buddhists.
Under Tethong’s leadership, TAI has consistently promoted respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Tibetans. The organization has also played a crucial role in strengthening Tibetan-led civil society groups with shared aims, contributing to a more robust and united front in the face of challenges posed by the PRC.
The International Religious Freedom Award serves as a testament to Lhadon Tethong’s dedication and the impactful work of the Tibet Action Institute in advancing religious freedom and human rights. As the world acknowledges these advocates, it also renews its commitment to the principles of the International Religious Freedom Act signed 25 years ago, striving for a world where individuals of all faiths can practice their beliefs freely and without fear of persecution.
