Joint Tibetan rally in Dharamshala on Wednesday calls for to release Panchen Lama Gedun Choekyi Nyima. The largest Tibetan organisations organized a joint rally against China calling for the release of the 11th Panchen Lama who was captured by China at the age of six in 1995. The rally was led young Tibetans mostly born outside Tibet.
“Students for a Free Tibet organisation ,Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) and Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) organized a street play in Dharamshala on17 th May, showing the young Lama’s abduction by the Chinese government at the age of six.” said the report published by the Hill Post.
“A rally was organized from Tibetan main temple, Tsuglagkhang in Mcleod Ganj to Katcchery Adda in lower Dharamshala, which was joined by hundreds of Tibetans raising slogans for his release and seeking support from the international community.” added the report.
According to the Free Tibet organization, the Panchen Lama is one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism, second only to the Dalai Lama himself. Perhaps his most important job is the role he plays in recognising the next reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, who then in turn finds the reincarnated Panchen Lama. This tradition has endured for centuries.
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama recognized Gedun Choekyi Nyima as the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama from a list of the possible candidates on 15th May, 1995. Just two days later, the child and his family was abducted by the Chinese government and even after 22 years, nothing is known about him.
The TWA demanded that Chinese government release a latest picture of the grown up Gendun Choekyi Nyima along with proof of his good health. The organization further demanded his release and to allow an independent body such as United Nations to meet him, said the report.
The organization has also sent their members to various consulates including the US and to the office of United Nations in New Delhi seeking their intervention in the matter and to put pressure on China.
