India Successfully Countered a Chinese Intrusion At Sikkim Border

India is reported to have successfully countered a Chinese attempt to intrude into its territories at Sikkim border. According to the sources of major breaking reports, India foiled a Chinese attempt to intrude into its territories across the Sikkim borders and thwarted the Chinese army away from intrusion. In the violent face off, at least 20 Chinese soldiers have been injured while 4 Indian soldiers also sustained injuries.

While incident took place on January 20 this year, the report did not come out until January 25. According to the official response from Indian officials, the incident is explained to be a minor one and the same has been resolved by the local commanders as per established protocols.

Responding to media queries related to the face-off between the Indian Army and Chinese soldiers on January 20, 2021, in Sikkim Sector, the Indian army according to the Financial Express issued a statement on Monday (January 25, 2021) stating, “There was a minor face-off at Nakula area of North Sikkim on January 20. And the same was resolved by local commanders as per established protocols.”

Despite claiming to have resolved the issues, the face offs across the borders of India has never been cleared since last year. While there has been regular intrusions along India’s border with Tibet, there has been a long haul of face offs along the borders ever since April 2020. This kind of border issues for India is a very new problem as it did not exist before Chinese occupation of Tibet.

While there has violent clashes along the borders in Ladakh last year, India needs to strengthen its stand on Tibet. As proposed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, if Tibet can be restored back into a demilitarised region, it can continue its pre-1959 role as the buffer between the two Asian giants to bring peace along the Himalayas. Huge defence spendings by both sides are wasteful and huge burden on their citizens.
