India to Confer Tibetan Doctor With Padma Shri Award 2018

According to the announcement of the full list of the recipients of the Padma awards by the Government of India on the occasion of Republic day, a Tibetan doctor will be conferred with fourth highest civilian honour of Indian Government, the Padma Shri Award. Dr. Yeshi Dhonden is being honoured with honour for his contribution in treatment of patients through traditional Tibetan medicine.

The honour is being presented as a part of the government’s effort to honour the ‘unsung heroes and a total of 85 people are being honoured with Padma Awards this year. Dr. Yeshi Dhonden, who is a monk and a former physician to His Holiness the Dalai Lama is being conferred with the honour for his contribution in treating thousands of patients through his herbal medicines and diet based on Sowa Rigpa, the Traditional Tibetan Medicine.

Ninety year old Dr. Yeshi Dhonden hails from Tibet and he is a Buddhist monk in life. He finished his medical training at the  tender age of twenty and later founded Men Tsee Khang, the Tibetan Medical College. He also served as His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s personal physician for about twenty years from 1960 to 1980.

Dr. Yeshi Dhonden is one of the foremost Tibetan doctors of the world. Dr. Dhonden has successfully treated patients with all kinds of ailments at his clinic in Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala and his treatment specialises for cancer patients. He has treated thousands of cancer patients from all over the world, including women with breast cancer. His treatment basically includes ancient Tibetan herbal therapies. He is a successful doctor in treating diseases such as AIDS and cancer.

Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

    Ven. Dr. Yeshi Dhondup is to be rejoiced by all Tibetans around the world. Govt. of India had befittingly bestowed this truly deserving award acknowledging his immense contribution in the field of Sowa Rigpa system of medicine, helping overcome dreaded disease, not only prolonging those afflicted with such diseases but also able to rejoice second phase of healthy life . Thousands and thousands of grateful people who had been under the medical care of Dr. Dhonden would join me in celebration & congratulate him for this remarkable achievement, May Dr. Yeshi Dhonden live long in the service of humanity!
