I proudly tell people that I’m a son of India: Dalai Lama Explains Why

The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama during a virtual conversation on Wednesday told that he proudly tells people that he is a son of India. His Holiness was talking to students from various Indian universities on Compassion – the answer in a troubled world. During the virtual conversation, the spiritual leader replied to questions from the audience too.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama was invited to speak to students from the Law Faculty of Delhi University; Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi; the National Institute of Technology, Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh and Chapra Central School, Saran, Bihar. The virtual conversation was live streamed on social media platforms as well.

When the convener Prof Raman Mittal of the Delhi University Law Faculty informed that they are seeking His Holiness’s guidance with regard to compassion and hope in such a difficult time the world is going through, His Holiness told that when we face problems and difficulties, he finds it useful to rely on the 8th century Nalanda master, Shantideva’s advice. Analyse the problem that confronts you. Examine whether it can be overcome. If it can, there’s no need to worry. Put the solution into effect. If the problem can’t be overcome, worrying about it won’t help. He finds this to be a very realistic assessment.

“If we have only a narrow, short-sighted outlook, our problems can seem to be huge. But if we look at them from a wider perspective, they don’t seem to be so daunting.” added the Tibetan spiritual leader at the beginning of his talk.

His Holiness while suggesting that whatever begins will have an end, he stressed that whatever problems we face, it’s always better to be honest and truthful. He reiterated his belief that if we revive the ancient Indian traditions of ‘ahimsa’ and ‘karuna’, non-violence and compassion, humanity will be happier. His Holiness the Dalai Lama explained to repay for India’s kindness in hosting and supporting the Tibetans, is determined to revive ancient Indian knowledge in a secular way suited to modern times.

“I proudly tell people that I’m a son of India and once a journalist asked me why. I told him that my mind is full of Indian thought and my body has been nourished by years of Indian rice, dal and roti. In the face of difficulties, ancient Indian knowledge of the mind and emotions has helped me cope. Wherever I go and whenever I can, I tell people about non-violence and compassion.” His Holiness shared with the students while acknowledging that he is the most long-standing guest of the Government of India.
