Dharamshala, 4th January: The Global Imam Council is the world’s largest non-governmental organization, representing a wide range of denominations and ideologies. Last year, on December 30th, the Global Imam Council issued a statement. The statement begins with “And never think that God is unaware of what the oppressors do. The Holy Quran 14.42”
The letter states that “The Global Imams Council is the world’s first and largest transnational non-governmental body of Muslim faith leaders from all Islamic denominations and schools of thought. We stand in support of, and united with, the oppressed Uyghur Muslims.”
The statement accuses the Chinese government stating “The Chinese Government continues to violate Chinese Muslims’ basic human and fundamental rights through oppression, torture, and dictatorship.”
The letter bars Muslims from participating in Olympics, it states “By the authority bestowed upon this Council by the Holy Islamic Seminary of Najaf and the Eminent Muftis of the Islamic World, the Global Imams Council rules that participation and attendance in the Beijing 2022 Olympics are prohibited. This event directly serves the interests of a tyrannical and oppressive regime that is responsible for the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Uyghurs,”
The letter ended by expressing gratitude to other organizations, “We applaud the growing number of organizations boycotting the Beijing 2022 Olympics and reaffirm our solidarity with the World Uyghur Congress. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to the many faith leaders and religious organizations that have expressed their support to Muslims during their calamities.”
Spearheaded by the United States of America, many other nations such as Japan, the UK, Australia, etc, boycotted(on a diplomatic level) the upcoming Olympics in Beijing, China, due to the latter country’s treatment of minorities especially Uyghur Muslims.
