First Tibetan Female Cricketer in India’s State-Level Competition Shines

In a landmark achievement for both Tibetan and Indian sports, 19-year-old Jetsun Narbu has become the first Tibetan woman to break into India’s fiercely competitive state-level cricket circuit. Representing the all-women’s Mumbai Cricket Association team, Narbu is not only aiming for a place in India’s national team but is also determined to raise awareness about her Tibetan heritage through her athletic platform.

Born in Mumbai and holding Indian citizenship, Narbu expressed her hopes in an interview with Radio Free Asia: “I want to represent India and bring attention to my Tibetan heritage through cricket. If I could achieve that as a Tibetan cricketer, it would be a dream come true.”

A Milestone for the Tibetan Community

Narbu’s rise in the world of cricket is a significant milestone for the Tibetan community in India, where cricket is more than just a sport—it’s a national passion. Whether played in the crowded streets of big cities or on the dusty lanes of rural villages, cricket unites Indians from all walks of life. Narbu’s journey into the sport is not just a personal victory but a beacon of inspiration for other Tibetan girls interested in breaking into traditionally male-dominated sports.

The Beginnings of a Dream

Narbu’s love for cricket began early in her childhood when she watched a televised match featuring female cricket players. That image ignited her desire to pursue the sport, and with strong encouragement from her father, Narbu Chee, she began her cricket training at the age of 13.

With support from Indian coaches and her family, Narbu steadily honed her skills and played in several prestigious tournaments. She has represented various teams at the state and national levels, including Under-19 and T20 competitions. Her cricket journey took off in 2021 when she played for the northeastern state of Sikkim in the Women’s Senior One-Day Trophy and the T20 Women’s Senior Tournament. By 2023, Narbu was representing Mumbai in the national T20 and Under-19 ODI tournaments.

Beyond cricket, Narbu is also a university student at Jai Hind College in Mumbai, where she is studying finance with aspirations of pursuing a career in investment banking, specializing in mergers and acquisitions.

Embracing Identity through Sports

Though she identifies strongly with her Tibetan heritage, Narbu has never faced discrimination because of her ethnicity. However, she has noticed the occasional curious glance from onlookers due to her distinct facial features. “In sports, skills and dedication should matter more than your background or ethnicity,” she emphasized, underscoring her belief that merit should always come before identity.

Narbu’s path is not without challenges. As one of the few Tibetan women in the Indian cricket scene, she is carving out a space where little precedent exists. “Competing in cricket as a Tibetan woman can be both daunting and empowering,” she shared, adding, “Whatever sport you choose, focus on your training and commitment. Through sports, we can not only showcase our talents but also bring attention to Tibet’s culture and cause.”

Jetsun Narbu’s journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes everywhere, reminding them that sports can be a powerful platform to represent not only individual achievements but also cultural identity on the world stage.
