The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Shri Jai Ram Thakur has told the police to increase security for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Following the arrest of two associates of Chinese espionage kingpin Charlie Peng from the state, concerns over Tibetan spiritual leader’s security has become very serious. His Holiness is currently living at his residence in McLeod Ganj.
Sonam Wangdu and Lan Hoo are suspected associates of the Charlie Peng. Wangdu, whose identity is not clear yet works in Chauntra in the district of Mandi while Lan Hoo is a Chinese national woman living with her daughters in Bir in the district of Kangra. The two suspects have been detained and security agencies are interrogating them now.
These suspected Chinese spy associates have been identified by following financial transactions traced between them and SK Traders (Hawala company) of Charlie Peng. The two have multiples foreign travel histories but no well established income source.
CM Thakur in a press briefing has informed that preliminary investigation results suggest that the two suspects were being paid for tracking and reporting the movement of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He has added that the police has been asked to beef up the security of the spiritual leader.
“The case is being investigated and preliminary investigations pointed out that they were paid to track and report the movement of the Dalai Lama,” said Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur.
Charlie Peng was arrested by the IT Department from New Delhi earlier this month for allegedly running money laundering racket with transactions over 1000 crore rupees. Interrogations have revealed he was also tasked by China to spy upon His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His travel histories and transaction details are being probed.
