Dalai Lama to Grace 83rd Birthday Celebrations in Ladakh

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is turning 83 on Friday and when the rest of the world will be celebrating the day in front of his portraits, celebrations in Ladakh scheduled to take place at the Shiwatsel Phodrang graced by himself. The people of Ladakh from earlier this had made their requests for His Holiness’s visit and he has arrived there on Tuesday.

His Holiness will be gracing the event organized in the celebration of his 83rd birthday at the Shiwatsel Phodramg in Ladakh by the people of the region. Although His Holiness has never been keen at having grand celebrations on his birthday, there has been request for his followers to give him the best gift he would wish for.

“The best gift for me on my birthday; please keep your own mind, your own heart more compassionate, more spirit of genuine concern for others’ well being. And with that motivation if possible serve others, help others…” His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been saying this at past celebrations.

Besides the local dignitaries and organizers at the celebration scheduled for Friday at the Shiwatsel Phodrang, the President of Central Tibetan Administration, Dr. Lobsang Sangay will be arriving in Ladakh today to take part in the celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s birthday.

From 10 to 12 July, His Holiness will give teachings on Shantideva’s A Guide to the Bodhisatva’s Way of Life (Tib: Chodjug). He will also participate in the Yarcho Chenmo-the annual ‘Summer Buddhist Council’ of philosophical debate and discussion – from July 18 to 20 at Samstanling Gonpa Sumoor in Nubra besides teachings in Nubra as well as in Leh at Shiwatsel teaching ground.
