Corona Racism: Northeast Indian Girl Brutally Beaten in India

In a shocking incident from in India’s National Capital Region, young girl from the country’s northeast region was brutally harassed and beaten for Corona racism. Such a shameful incident came while the country is reeling through a daily spike of more three cases of infection from the virus, irrespective of race, religion or nationality of the victims.

Chong Hoi Misao, a 20-year-old girl hailing from Manipur, was brutally beaten by locals from Faizapur, Gurugram in Haryana while passing through locality. The young girl had been there to meet a friend over lunch there according to a close friend of the victim. However, while returning, locals started to racially abuse her on the road.

According to the allegations, the girl was blocked on the road to racially attack her for passing in front of their houses. A close friend of the girl alleged that she was abused by calling ‘corona’. Even when she warned of making complaints with police, they threatened that the police were on their side. It ultimately led to the family members of a house beating her with sticks.

While a police case has been registered later on, three accused has been arrested on Saturday. The incident was caught by the National Human Rights Commission and it took suo motu cognizance of the brutal attack on the 20-year-old. The NHRC sent notices to the Haryana Government and the Gurugram Police Commissioner asking for a report on the attack.

Since the coronavirus pandemic originated from China’s Wuhan city, Chinese and their look-likes across the world reportedly faced racial discrimination. In India, there is a large portion of its citizens throughout the northeastern part of the country featuring Chinese look-likes. Failing to recognize the diversity of the country, there has been series of corona racism attacks on them since the outbreak across India.
