Chinese National with Indian Docs Arrested on Espionage Suspicion

A Chinese national possessing vital Indian documents has been arrested from Darjeeling on suspicion of espionage activities in the country. The suspect was arrested by Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on Sunday morning following leads of the person trying to cross into Nepal from the regional borders on Indian documents.

The Central Armed Police forces, SSB on arresting the suspect, identified the person as Wangdu, a resident of Sichuan region under China. After interrogation, the Chinese national was carrying a significant amount of cash in different currencies such US dollars, Chinese Yuan, Indian Rupees as well as Hong Kong dollars. The person was carrying a Chinese travel document as well as an Indian voter ID and an Aadhaar card with the name of Thunathen Funechak Lama.

“After intercepting him, Sashastra Seema Bal officials found him carrying $11,000, 1,554 Chinese yen, Rs 44,570 and 60 Hong Kong currency notes. A Chinese travel document was also found on him. An Indian voter card and Aadhaar card found in his possession mentioned his name as Thunathen Funechak Lama, a resident of Mirik in Darjeeling.” said the report published by Times Now.

The officials also revealed that while the person denied of knowing Chinese language, they found him writing in Chinese from his chat histories in his mobile phone. A Chinese national free roaming on Indian documents in such sensitive border regions of the country has alerted the officials to suspect him of carrying out espionage activities.
