Chinese Influenced Nepal to Ban Tibetans Celebrating Dalai Lama’s Birthday

A senior official of the United States has explained in a statement that the Tibetan refugees in Nepal are facing growing restriction due to Chinese influence. The statement explained on the fact that Nepal banned celebrations from the Tibetan community on their spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s birthday.

Acting Assistant Secretary Alice G Wells in her written statement the House of Foreign Affairs Sub-Committee on Asia and the Pacific recently reported that with increasing Chinese influence in Nepal, the Himalayan kingdom is increasing its restrictions upon the Tibetan refugees community there.

The Acting Assistant Secretary who heads the Bureau of South and central Asia has said that Nepal had increased restrictions on the Tibetan Buddhist community, including preventing public celebration of the Dalai Lama’s birthday.

“The government has also increased restrictions on the Tibetan Buddhist community, including preventing the public celebration of the Dalai Lama’s birthday. As Chinese influence has grown in Nepal, so has the Government of Nepal’s restrictions on the Tibetan community.” Alice Wells wrote in her statement on Tuesday.

Nepal is a key region for the Tibetan refugees both in terms of escaping as well as connecting with those inside Tibet. According to records, as many as 20,000 Tibetans refugees reside in the country and they are facing an increasing restriction there. It has become extremely difficult for the Tibetans escape into exile via Nepal as it is more conveniently heeding to Chinese influences. Although the government has recently stalled the bill for extradition of Tibetans to China, the Nepal government has been conforming to China’s ‘One China Policy’, leaving no space for Tibetans to demonstrate against China.
