Chinese Delegation Warns US not to Support Dalai Lama

According to the report in the Global Times a National People’s Congress delegation of legislators from the Tibet Autonomous Region to the United States that completed on Tuesday had stressed on the importance of US-China relationship and warned them not to support the Dalai Lama or so called as the ‘Dalai Clique’ according to the report.

” A National People’s Congress delegation of legislators from the Tibet Autonomous Region of China completed a six-day trip to the US on Monday with the goal of reiterating China’s sovereignty over Tibet and urging Washington “not to support the Dalai Lama clique,” a Chinese expert said on Tuesday.” said the report in the Global Times.

The delegation has been led by Baima Wangdui, deputy of the People’s Congress of the Tibet Autonomous Region, the delegation met US Senator Dan Sullivan, Congressmen Darin LaHood, Rick Larsen, Jim McGovern and US Department of State officials in Washington DC. The Beijing base news agency added that the delegation has emphasized the importance of a good China-US relationship, but also reiterated that the Tibet question is about China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is a core interest of China.

Although the delegation has been affirmed by the US counterparts that the United States considers Tibet as a part of China and does not support the fight for ‘Tibetan Independence’, the Chinese are worried that the officials of the US government continues to meet the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama regularly.

“Although the US said they recognize Tibet as part of China and would not support ‘Tibetan independence,’ they have been meeting the Dalai Lama and in the past have funded the Tibetan ‘government-in-exile,’” Qin Yongzhang, an ethnologist at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences told the Global Times on Tuesday according to the report.

Since China forcibly occupied Tibet in 1959, His Holiness the Dalai Lama followed by thousands of Tibetans fled to exile in India. After more than sixty years, while the Tibetan exile administration has clearly informed that Tibetans will exist within the framework of Chinese administration if the Tibetans were given their rightful privilege to self determination through the ‘Middle Way Policy’, China continues to claim that Tibetans lead by His Holiness seeks separation from China.

Wouldn’t “several tens of thousands” better reflect the number of Tibetans who escaped Tibet in the 50’s and early 60’s? I’ve seen estimates of 80,000 (and of course the number of exiles has gone up since then) The story says “thousands,” which is absurdly low. I think somebody should fix this in interest of accuracy.
