A Chinese businessman working in Poland has been arrested by the country’s security agencies on charges of spying for China. The BBC report noted that a Chinese businessman along with a Polish man has been arrested on Tuesday following a long investigation in Poland.
The first person, Wang Weijing – also known as Stanislaw Wang is a Chinese national working at Huawei as a sales director at the firm according to his LinkedIn profile and had worked as an attache at China’s embassy in Poland from 2006-11.
The second man is Piotr D, a former employee of the country’s security services and had been working in telecoms according to the BBC report.
A Warsaw court agreed to the prosecutors’ requests to arrest the men for three months according to the report and they could they face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty of spying.
Recently, Chinese telecom giant, Huawei has been under strict scrutiny after its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou – the daughter of its founder – was arrested in Canada last month.
According to the BBC report, critics argue China may be using Huawei as a proxy to help hack attacks, eavesdrop on conversations or gain high-level access to sensitive networks.
