India suggests that completing its climate targets may be connected to NSG membership, which is now being held up by China’s resistance.
Dharamshala, 2nd November: In a bold move, India said on Sunday that achieving its climate goals could be linked to issues such as its membership in the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group, which has been stalled due to China’s opposition, and the availability of technology, as it pushed for the inclusion of differentiated responsibilities, which would require the developed world to meet its commitments.
The pitch for NSG membership is part of India’s demand for the principle of “Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC)” to be the basis for climate action at the G20 meeting in Italy, which it has said it should get on the basis of its responsible conduct as a nuclear state.
Meanwhile, China rushes to burn more coal, jeopardizing climate goals. Due to a lack of electricity, the country is rushing to increase mining despite the hazards to the environment, miners’ safety, and the economy. China’s emissions and harmful air pollution will rise as a result of burning coal, which is already the world’s single biggest driver of human-caused climate change. China is developing mines to produce an additional 220 million metric tonnes of coal each year, up roughly 6% from last year. China already mines and consumes more coal than the rest of the world put together.
