The 25th edition of Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial (GCM) Gold Cup, the premier exile Tibetan soccer tournament was won by the defending champions, Mundgod FC. The final match of the 2019 GCM tournament saw a serious competition between Mundgod FC and Dhundupling FC on Sunday but brilliant goal keeping helped Mundgod defend the title.
This year’s edition of the GCM tournament began on May 31st with a total of 23 teams from Tibetan communities around the world. With 30 games played over the course of 10 days from then, Mundgod FC, Dhundupling FC, Kollegal FC and North America FC reached to the semi finals. Finally, Mundgod and Dhundupling clashed in the final match of the tournament on Sunday.
With both the teams playing very competitively, they were tied with one each score throughout match that extended to 20 minutes of extra time. After full time and the extra time couldn’t find out a winner, they went for a penalty shootout. In the penalty shootout, the Mundgod FC captain and their goal keeper made two brilliant saves that finally helped Mundgod FC defend the title with 5-3 final score.
The Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup (GCMGC) football tournament is the most prominent sports activity in Tibetan exile organised by the Tibetan National Sports Association in remembering the late mother of the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
