A Tibetan student burns self on fire at the Central University Of Tibetan Studies, Varanasi today. According to reports, the incident is reported to have taken place after 9 am in the morning today. The young student is said to have shouted out slogans for Tibetan independence.
Tenzin Choeyang, 19 is a resident of South Indian Tibetan settlement, Kollegal is a student at the Central University and he took the extreme step of burning self at their boys dorm in the University campus. Though he has been instantly shifted to the hospital, he is being treated for almost 70% burn injury all over his body. Fortunately his head and face has survived the burn.
According to the President of Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, Chime Namgyal, President of Central Tibetan Administration Dr. Lobsang Sangay was speaking at the University when Choeyang burnt himself at around 9 am in the morning today. He also described Tenzin Choeyang as a very patriotic student who actively participates in RTYC activities.
According to Bangchen, famous Tibetan activist Tenzin Tsundue also described Choeyang as a very patriotic an active participant of Tibetan protest activities.
The report informed that Tenzin Choeyang spoke at the hospital that he has burnt himself for the cause of Tibet issue. While it is also report that he has left a letter of reason behind his protest in which he has written that ‘his body is for Tibet’. He is the second Tibetan student to self immolate in India.
Tibetans inside and outside have since 2008 strongly resorted to the self immolation as a means of protest against the Chinese authorities who invaded Tibet in 1959. Till now more than 150 Tibetans have resorted to burning oneself and many of them have not survived the injury.
