TIBETAN TEENAGERS BEGIN THEIR SCHOOL YEAR WITH MILITARY TRAINING.

Dharamshala, 6th October: A six-day training on national defense education was held at a newly opened camp in Nagchu City. The opening ceremony of China’s third military training summer camp for teenage kids in Nagchu City has been announced by Chinese authorities in the central Tibetan region of U-Tsang.

The propaganda department of the Nagchu Municipal Committee, a vast region in the north of the area controlled as Tibet Autonomous Region since 1965, conducted an inauguration ceremony for a military training camp for teenage school children on September 13th. The Nagchu Education Bureau, Nagchu Fire Rescue Unit, and Nagchu No.2 Medium Unit, as well as more than 500 students from Nagchu’s Second Middle School, a Tibetan-only boarding school, took part in the ceremony. The third session, which lasted six days, was reported by the Chinese state media tibet.cn.

Following the inaugural ceremony and a rendition of the Chinese national anthem, Pasang Wangmo, a class 7 (age 12) student, addressed on behalf of all the trainees. She urged all students to follow commands and to take their national defense training and studies seriously.

Students were taken to national defense education bases at the same time as they were being organized to attend the summer camp for military training, where they were given lectures on national defense education, national defense education knowledge, and military doctrine, as well as school rules and regulations as the main content.

Similar military camps for children have been reported in the past by Free Tibet, including one near Nyingtri, close to India’s heavily militarized border. The camps appear to have been built in the first half of this year.

According to Chinese official media, such institutions are critical in instilling “patriotism, love for China, and the spirit of defending national borders” in young Tibetans through national defense education.
