Dharamshala, 4th August: According to Geshe Dorji Damdul, Director of Tibet House, India, and the United States can work together to put an end to the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) expansionist plan by serving as a “civilized role model” for the rest of the world. Geshe Dorji Damdul, who was part of the Civil Society Roundtable organized during US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken’s visit to India last week, told that the Tibetans would have had to “live in fear and suspicion all the time” if India had not provided them asylum.
According to ThePrint, Geshe Dorje said “India as the largest democratic nation, and USA as the oldest democracy collectively can be the civilized role model for the world to bring an end to the expansionism of CCP, which is otherwise the greatest threat to world peace, and democracy,”.
The Joe Biden administration issued a strong message to China on his first visit to New Delhi. Aside from Geshe Dorji Damdul, Blinken had a separate meeting with Ngodup Dongchung, a spokesperson of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and a prominent official in the Central Tibetan Administration. Geshe Dorji Damdul said he discussed “inclusivity” and the Dalai Lama’s teachings during his discussion with the US Secretary of State, who observed that current education has “loopholes” since “it emphasizes the development of the brain and not at all on the development of the heart”.
Blinken made a speech on ‘Inclusive Development’ during the roundtable, and Dorji claimed he was “truly impressed by the speech … He spoke on the need for universal responsibility for dealing with global issues such as the Covid pandemic. He also emphasized on shared values and that everyone should have a voice”. Beijing has expressed displeasure with the meeting with Tibetan leaders, claiming that it is a “violation of the US promise to recognize Tibet as part of China.”
According to Dorji, the United States must continue to assist the Tibetan cause because it will send a powerful message to the rest of the world. “What the Joe Biden administration is doing to support Tibet is a great message for the world that unless the world puts a check on CCP today, it can really destroy the principle of democracy, rule of law, and civility in the world,” said Dorji, who formerly worked as a Dalai Lama interpreter. Dorji feels that the Tibetans who abandoned their homeland in quest of a quiet existence in India would have been in severe straits if India had not provided them with refuge.
Last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a three-day visit to Tibet, where he met with Tibet Military Command officials. The US viewed the visit as a threat to India.
