Dharamshala, 2nd July: According to SFT Campaign Director Pema Doma, they have teamed forces with the Burmese democracy movement since China’s repression in Tibet and its staunch support for the oppressive Myanmar military dictatorship are “two sides of the same coin.” “In June, we witnessed unprecedented coordination among Asia’s pro-democracy organizations. SFT sought to strengthen our relationships with pro-democracy and human rights organizations in Myanmar, Thailand, and other Milk Tea Alliance nations. We organized and participated in virtual and in-person events that aided Asia’s democracy and self-determination “Doma elaborated.
Doma stated that Tibetan activists will continue to strongly support the Burmese pro-democracy movement and will call to the international community to force the military junta to stop the slaughter of innocent civilians. SFT staff also spoke at the Hong Kong movement’s 6/12 event to honor the second anniversary of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, a Milk Tea alliance rally in Washington D.C., and a Thai rally in Washington Square Park, according to her.
Later that month, Doma spoke at RightsCon, where he joined other Tibet activists from around the world to debate the connection between technology and the Tibetan Resistance. SFT took the lead in organizing the Global Day of Action against the 2022 Beijing Olympics on June 23, International Olympics Day, with 50+ protests and actions in more than 25 countries around the world, she said.
Hundreds of Tibetan supporters marched alongside coalitions of Uighurs, Hong Kongers, Southern Mongolians, Taiwanese, and allies from New York to Melbourne, Toronto, and Paris to protest what SFT calls the “Genocide Games.” Doma declared that the “day was a big success,” and that they will pursue a robust global effort to prevent the 2022 Beijing Olympics from taking place.
