COVID-19 Tibetan Infection: 3 Year Old Case Brings toll to 41 in India and Nepal

Covid-19 Second Surge Wreaks Havoc on Tibetans in exile

Dharamshala, 30th April: India is currently in the midst of a deadly second wave of infections, with 3,14,835 cases recorded in the last 24 hours, the highest number since the pandemic began. The second wave, which has been shown to be much deadlier than the first and to have resulted in more rapid viral development than previously seen, is fueled, according to health officials and physicians, by people letting their defenses down and disregarding the Covid precautions.

A spiraling of cases were registered, especially in Tibetan-populated areas like Dharamshala, Varanasi, Dehradun, Hunsur, and Orissa to some extent, with places like the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) in Varanasi facing a critical shortage of doctors and nurses.

Secretary Palden Dhondup, Department of Health, CTA made an impassioned appeal to doctors and nurses across India to come forward and volunteer their services at the premier Tibetan university, which is now one of the worst affected Tibetan clusters, during the 55th Covid task force briefing.

The Tibetan community in India, Nepal, and Bhutan has recorded 2097 cases (those reported to DOHe) and over 50 deaths since the Wuhan-caused pandemic started. There were 260 cases recorded this week (131 M: 129 F), with the youngest being 2 years old and the oldest being 90. There are 480 active cases in total as of 27th April.

The Covid-19 situation at the Tibetan Youth Hostel (TYH) in Bangalore, where a cluster case was discovered last week, has worsened as more cases have been discovered. In addition to the 15 people who tested positive for the virus last week, 25 more people have tested positive for the virus as of Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to 45. To prevent the virus from spreading further, the infected students are quarantined in separate areas of the hostel compound.

In comparison, ironically, the Tibetan Youth Hostel in New Delhi has registered no cases since the outbreak began, as Delhi has been one of the hardest hit and the epicenter of the deadly second wave in the world. Since the beginning of the first lockdown, which was enforced throughout India during the first wave, the compound has been locked.
