Dalai Lama Says is Happy to Live in India for Rest of His Life

In a recent interview of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at his residence in Dharamshala, he has said that he would be happy to live in India for the rest of his life. The Tibetan spiritual leader explains that it will be of no use to return to Tibet if there is no freedom. Therefore he said that he would be happy to live peacefully in India.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama has told in the interview to The Week that if China sincerely ask him to return to Tibet, he told that he prefers freedom. His Holiness has further explained that if he returns to Tibet to live in a big house without freedom, there is no use.

“If they sincerely ask me to return – although on many occasions to some Chinese individuals I mentioned that I prefer freedom – and if I return to China, I (will be) put in a big house with no freedom. There is no use. I am happy to live in India for the rest of my life,” the Dalai Lama said.

During the interview, His Holiness was also asked about his successor. The spiritual leader explained that he can only be concerned about this life and the successor is not of his concern. For His Holiness, the teachings and the institution of the Dalai Lama are the next important issues.

His Holiness also told that the Tibet issue no longer a struggle for political independence. It is a struggle for preservation of the Tibetan identity. Political independence is mainly meant for the happiness of the people, but does it alone guarantee happiness. There is a need to focus on preservation of Tibet’s cultural, religious and linguistic identity.
