PM Modi Didn’t Prevent Dalai Lama’s Meeting with Xi in 2014

The Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala has recently clarified that Chinese president Xi Jinping did not give a definite response for a requesting to have meeting with His Holiness in 2014. The clarification has been issued after a book by a prominent journalist claimed that according to His Holiness, Modi government was very cautious at allowing the meeting to happen.

The Secretary at the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in a statement told that although they approached the Chinese president Xi for a meeting a with His Holiness the Dalai Lama during the latter’s visit to India back in 2014, there wasn’t any definite response to the request. He then clarified that therefore there is no basis of being cautious on the part of the Modi government.

“Although we had proposed a meeting between His Holiness and President Xi Jinping during his visit to India in 2014, the Chinese authorities had not given a definite response. Therefore, there was no basis for the government of India being cautious of the initiative.” Senior official and Secretary in the Dalai Lama’s private office Chime R. Chhoekyapa said in a statement.

According to the book, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama had requested for a meeting when Xi Jinping was visiting India for talks in 2014. Surprisingly the Chinese president had agreed to the meeting then! However, the meeting could not happened as Indian government was cautious.

And it is then as we talk of the prime minister that the Dalai Lama drops his political bombshell. ‘In 2014, when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Delhi for talks with Prime Minister Modi, I requested a meeting with him. President Xi Jinping agreed, but the Indian government was cautious about the meeting, so it didn’t happen.’ according Sonia Singh in the report published by NDTV earlier.
