Dalai Lama On Time’s Cover Once Again at 60 Years in Exile

The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama is once again the cover face of the Time magazine’s March issue, at 60 years in exile. While His Holiness’s first cover for Time was titled as ‘The escape that rocked the reds’, this cover has been titled as ‘The Survivor’.

Following the failed Tibetan national uprising in Lhasa on March 10, 1959 against the mighty Chinese army, the then 23 year old Dalai Lama had to escape into exile to India. Following the two weeks perilious journey from Lhasa to India, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his small caravan arrived India, by the end of March 1959.

On April 20, 1959, Time magazine published with the cover of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, for the first time, sharing the historic journey. This time, the Time has yet again published His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the cover of Time’s March 18, 2019 issue.

“In the six decades since, the leader of the world’s most secluded people has become the most recognizable face of a religion practiced by nearly 500 million people worldwide. But his prominence extends beyond the borders of his own faith, with many practices endorsed by Buddhists, like mindfulness and meditation, permeating the lives of millions more around the world.” said the cover story published in Time.

It also added that the cause of Tibetan self-rule remains alive in Western minds thanks to admirers ranging from Richard Gere to the Beastie Boys to Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who calls him a “messenger of hope for millions of people around the world.”

It’s pleasant that in this issue, at least, there are no advertisements for sexual aids.
