The Arunachal Pradesh police on Tuesday detained the leaders of the student body for allegedly involving in extortion during their protest rallies against the Tibetan refugees carried out recently in Bomdila. The detention order issued by the West Kameng deputy commissioner has been made under Section 3(i) of the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 2014.
The responsible police officer explained that the Students’ Union Movement of All Arunachal’s (SUMAA) general secretary Suraj Ligu and convenor Tarh Rekam were detained after multiple complaints of complaints of extortion were received from traders and government officials. Besides, the officials have solid evidence in the form of CCTV footage and call records of their involvement in extortion.
“The extortion attempts were in connection with the SUMAA activities in Bomdila. A case of attempt to extortion has been registered at the Naharlagun police station and the police are on the lookout for other accused persons as well,” Capital Complex SP M Harsha Vardhan informed, “We have clear evidence of their direct involvement in extortion in terms of CCTV footage, calls, etc,” the SP added.
District Magistrate of West Kemang District of Arunachal Pradesh from Bomdila issued a prohibitory order upon protests against Tibetan refugees by the Students’ United Movement of All Arunachal (SUMAA) on Monday. The students group has been carrying out a protest against Tibetan refugees since the beginning of this month leading to unrest in the region.
The students union in addition to demanding rollback of Tibetan Rehabilitation Policy 2014 (TRP) from the State it also demands the Tibetan committee to furnish a family tree-cum-records of all Tibetan refugees settled in Arunachal Pradesh and a clarification in written from the representatives of the Tibetan population that they would not ask for ‘citizenship’ in the future.
The prohibitory order bars restricts movement of people in groups of more than 4, closure of wine shops, entry of arms/lethal weapons and checking of all vehicles entering the district. District Magistrate’s prohibitory order intends to bring about peace and stability in the region which has been threatened by the unrest brought about by the student body’s protest, which on Sunday also announced another round of agitation from Wednesday.
