The veteran Tibetan healer who is a monk too was announced as one of the exceptional persons to be honoured with India’s civilian honour, the Padma Shri on the eve of 69th Republic Day of India. Dr. Yeshi Dhonden expressed his happiness and thanked the government of India for such an honour and told that all of Tibet is celebrating the honour.
“I am very happy and thankful to the Indian government for such an honour (the Padma Shri). All of Tibet is celebrating this great honour,” said the 92 year old Dr. Yeshi Dhonden at his clinic in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala adding that the government has been very helpful and supportive.
“This system of medicine is the oldest one. Sixty per cent of it came from India while some of its script came from China, Mongolia, Bhutan, etc. Many years ago, Nagarjuna, not only a Buddhist monk but also a great physician of Ayurveda who lived in the second century AD in India, also contributed globally for the development of Ayurveda. We have preserved it and are still preserving it by practicing this system of healing,” he explained further about the Tibetan medicine, which he has been able to cure his patients.
The veteran Tibetan healer began practicing the traditional Tibetan medicine at the age of 20 and even served as the personal physician to the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, from 1961 to 1980. He was one of core founding members of Men-Tsee-Khang, formally known as the Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute at Dharamshala, at the advice of the Dalai Lama and headed of the institution until his retirement in 1976.
For the past 40 years, Dr. Dhonden has been practicing at his private clinic in Mcleodganj, treating thousands of patients, especially cancer ridden people, from around the world. He is famous at having cured cancer ailments and a large number of people come to see him with deep faith every day.
“Except polio, he can treat every illness like brain damage, mental problems, cancer, etc.,” claims a patient stating that total number of patients treated by him could run over more than a hundred thousand. The Tibetan doctor has been honoured with one of India’s highest civilian honour, Padma Shri 2018 for his continued service to people through Tibetan medicine.
