The latest Tibetan who set himself to fire on Saturday in protest against the Chinese calling for Freedom in Tibet succumbed to the burns and passed away on Sunday according to the sources. In addition to this tragic result, the father of the young man is also said to have detained by the Chinese authorities claiming that a huge money has been spent for treating his son.
The Tibetan self immolator who was later identified as Konpe, aged about 30 years old was a former monk at the Kirti monastery. Konpe was a former resident of the Chukle Gongma pastoral community in Ngaba county’s Cha village, married Kelsang Lhamo, a daughter of the Rawa family in Meuruma Settlement No. 2, about a year ago and had joined her family there according to sources.
Konpe self immolated at around 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 23 on the main road of Ngaba town, a site of numerous self-immolations and other protests calling for Tibetan freedom. Police and the locals at site tried to extinguish the fire and carried him to the Barkham hospital. Though they were able to get Konpe to the hospital by 10pm, he is reported to have died around 5pm on the next day.
“But Konpe’s father has now been detained by authorities in Barkham, who tell him that tens of thousands of yuan [10,000 yuan = U.S. $1,530] were spent on Konpe’s medical treatment before he died,” reported RFA as a source saying.
This is the 152nd Tibetan to have set themselves on fire in protest against the Chinese control over Tibet, calling for Freedom in Tibet and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet.
