Richard Gere discussed Tibet issue with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel while he was in Berlin for the premier of his latest movie at the Berlinale. The US Actor and the German Chancellor met in the Chancellery on Thursday morning.
“Just before the premiere of his new movie at the Berlinale, actor Richard Gere met with Angela Merkel in the Chancellery. They discussed the situation in Tibet – and perhaps mentioned a certain US president, too.” said the news report published by Deutsche Welle.
The talk between Gere and Merkel was officially “about the current situation in Tibet,” said Merkel’s spokesperson Steffen Seibert according to the report. Though the political decision might have been a stint for Merkel owing to the fact of the upcoming elections, they discussed about the politically sensitive issue, Tibet.
On Wednesday, Gere also met with German Green Party politician and Bundestag Vice President Claudia Roth to also discuss Tibet as well as the political situation in the U.S according another report in Variety.
Richard Gere serves as the chair of International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), which works to promote human rights and democratic freedoms for Tibetans. Founded in 1988, ICT maintains offices in Washington, D.C., and in various European cities, including Berlin and London, as well as in Dharamsala, India.
Richard Gere is a strong supporter of the Tibet cause. He has been an avid Tibetan Buddhist student following His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet and they are also very good friends. Besides he strong advocacy for human rights inside Tibet, the Hollywood actor is involved with different campaigns for AIDS awareness and the rights of tribal people around the world.
