China Warns Taiwan Against The Possible Dalai Lama Visit

The Beijing government has warned the Taiwan government against the possibility of the Dalai Lama visit to the country after parliamentary delegates from Taiwan visited the Tibetan spiritual leader in India recently, following which speaker of Legislative Yuan of the state publicly invited the Dalai Lama to speak at their parliament.

“China on Wednesday warned Taiwan’s new government against allowing exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama to visit, after a high-profile Taiwanese legislator invited him to the self-ruled island that Beijing claims as its own.” said the report by Reuters.

China invaded Tibet in 1959 initially by claiming that they were liberating Tibet from serfdom but later incorporated the Tibetan territory as inseparable part of China. His Holiness the Dalai Lama who is one of the most revered leaders in the world today and a noble laureate is regarded as a separatist by China.

“The intention of some forces in Taiwan to collude with separatists seeking ‘Tibet independence’ and to create disturbances will have a severe impact on relations across the Taiwan Strait,” Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said in a news briefing. “We firmly oppose any form of visit to Taiwan by the Dalai Lama.” according to the report.

“Freddy Lim, one of Taiwan’s most famous heavy-metal singers and an outspoken China critic who was elected to parliament in January, invited the Dalai Lama when he met him in India last week.” said the report.

According to the report, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is highly respected in Taiwan. On Tuesday, Taiwan Foreign Minister David Lee told lawmakers in parliament that if the Dalai Lama decides to come, the ministry will review the matter very carefully.
