Police Proposed to Double Up The Dalai Lama Palace Security

In the fresh reports in The Tribune, the state police have proposed for additional funds as well as manpower to tighten the security at the palace of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in McLeodganj, Dharamshala. They have sent a detailed proposal of the project to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The proposal is said to include installation of very advanced security cameras and many sophisticated equipments.

The proposed security beefing up is made in the view of rising threats from certain sector of community that is said to be funded by the Chinese government to shame the Dalai Lama across the world. This proposal also comes just days after the Chinese have been reported to have co-opted the Shugden community across the world to make stronger protest against the Dalai Lama.

There have been several instances of spies being caught in Dharamshala too. The proposal was made after review of the existing security by various agencies, it includes the State CID, Intelligence Bureau(IB), Military Intelligence.

The present security includes inner ring of Tibetan security personnel covered by 50 Himachal Police personnel. They protect the whole palace round the clock.

The new proposal says to install high-resolution 360 degrees cameras, baggage scanners and sophisticated sabotage-check equipment at the entrance of the Dalai Lama’s palace. “We have proposed a full-fledged battalion for his security against the existing strength of 50 Himachal Police personnel,” said a senior police functionary. If the proposal is implemented, 100 police personnel will guard him round the clock that is the double of the existing security.

The police also wants up the security at the residence of the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorjee.
