After the completion of final round of elections by exile Tibetans across the world on April 11, 2021, the counting of the votes began at all the locations from Tuesday morning. This general election will elected the next president or Sikyong of the Tibetan government in exile and the members of Tibetan Parliament in Exile.
The first day of counting registered a tally of 5690 votes lead by former speaker of Tibetan parliament in exile, Penpa Tsering. As the counting continued through the second day of counting across various regional election bodies of Tibetan communities across the world, Penpa Tsering retained the lead. By the end of second day of counting, the vote share stands at 32199 votes for Penpa Tsering and 26590 votes for Kelsang Dorjee Aukatsang.
These figures are the majority of final vote numbers and it indicates for victory to Penpa Tsering. The current stand of vote sharing is 55% in favour of Penpa Tsering and 45% in favour of Kelsang Dorjee Aukatsang.
In the preliminary round of elections held in January this year, Penpa Tsering emerged as the frontrunner (23762), while Kelsang Dorjee Aukatsang emerged in the second spot(14031) while Gyari Dolma was declared to have secured the third spot(13171), from a total of six candidates. The first two candidates have contested in the final round of elections.
According to the Chief Election Commissioner, the preliminary election in January saw a record voter turnout of 76.78 per cent, which he said was the highest turnout rate till date. Tibetans from 26 countries went to the polls through the facilitation of 57 local Election Commissions around the world.
